One of the hardest things that young couples report during their first year of marriage is getting to grips with joint finances. While most are willing to share what they have with their partner, they are not sure on the best way to bring this sharing into effect so that they can share with their new partner, but at the same time maintain financial security and a degree of independence. Some couples resolve this by resorting to separate finances and others find a way to keep things together, but it is generally reported as one of the biggest strains on newly married couples.

As well as this, there is also the problem that many people find it difficult to budget and control their finances. It is one thing to fail to keep track of expenditures when you are single, but when you are married you have more to answer to than just yourself. This is especially true once you have children. If one partner fails to keep control of their spending while the other is forced to worry about finances, it can create an enormous strain on the relationship.

Family Budget

One of the best answers to this dilemma is to create a family budget. This should outline what is allowed for the various expenses, which is to be responsible for what expenses and how much each partner can spend on discretionary expenses. While this may seem like a drastic response that takes away all … Read more

Staying on top of the family finances does not have to be difficult.
With a little planning, your finances can be kept up to date with ease. Believe me, having a handle on your family finances goes a long way in creating family harmony.

The first step is to set up a bookkeeping system. We’ve used Quicken software for years. It has helped to keep track of our expenses, and we have been very happy with the program. It takes a little bit of time to set up initially. The second part of your bookkeeping system involves setting up a place to save your receipts. We use a small cardboard divider file with a special slot devoted to “receipts that need to be posted”. The key idea here is to have a place where you store all receipts from expenses (including ATM withdrawals) so that they are readily available when you go to enter them into your bookkeeping software.

Once you have the system set up, then you simply enter your receipts, whether income or expenses. As you enter each item, you select a category for it to go into. Reconciling your account is done online. One of the greatest advantages in using an automated system like this is the ability to see your expenses by category. With the click of a button, you can find out what you spent on groceries, entertainment or any other category for any time period, like … Read more

Reducing your phone bill is a very important component towards eliminating unnecessary expenses, during the course of the year. Ask yourself whether you need the different amenities that come with your phone package, in an effort to put yourself in a better situation, monetarily. This helps reduce stress and expenses.

A key tip to improving your personal financial solution is paying off your credit-card balances in full every month. Credit-card companies can charge extremely high rates, sometimes in excess of 15%. It’s difficult to learn how to manage finances together when you’ve been managing your finances on you own, for better or worse, up until now. But when you become part of a couple, many things change, and your finances are no exception! Some couples take the traditional path of blending all their finances together, however more and more couples are deciding to keep their finances separate. .
What are the benefits of each option? The benefits of consolidating funds into one checking account includes easier record keeping, simplified money management (ideally), and less paperwork when applying for a loan. In addition, the blending of finances can create a “unified front” in that aspect of a relationship that simply can’t be argued with. Obviously, the drawbacks are that both people are actively using the account and that will make it harder to track transactions and monitor your balance when you don’t know what the other is doing.
On the other hand, maintaining separate accounts will allow each person in the relationship more freedom, because they won’t have to run purchases by the other person. In addition, doing so may create fewer complications in the relationship, allow each person to build their own good credit, and quite simply allow them to maintain a sense of independence. The most obvious downfall to a his and her finance arrangement is that it can be disproportionately unfair. If one person makes $60,000 per year, and the other $30,000, the … Read more
